The primary purpose of the International Association of Forensic Nurses Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Education Guidelines is to help the registered or advanced practice nurse meet the medical forensic needs of those who have been affected by IPV, including individual patients, families, communities, and systems. Registered nurses who perform IPV medical forensic evaluations must receive additional and specific didactic and clinical preparation to care for adult and adolescent patients who have experienced IPV. The registered nurse practicing within recommendations outlined in the Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) Education Guidelines uses the nursing process and applies established evidence-based standards of forensic nursing practice to ensure that all patients reporting IPV receive a competent medical forensic examination, taking into consideration developmental, cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, sexual, and socioeconomic diversity.
